Psychotherapy Q&A

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a process for treating mental health issues where a patient and provider talk about the patient’s emotional problems. Through talking, the patient and provider discover a useful way of understanding the problems that helps a patient cope better with future challenges in life. Dr. Kleinman offers two styles of psychotherapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP).

In Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, patients meet weekly with Dr. Kleinman to explore their symptoms and concerns, trying to look at the thoughts, emotions, behaviors, memories, and mental ideas that may be influencing their experience. This therapy helps patients better understand how their mind works and how to make sense of what it does.

In Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), patients meet twice weekly with Dr. Kleinman to do a more intensive exploration of their emotional problems. TFP helps patients discover the origins of their symptoms and the emotional patterns that often perpetuate the symptoms. It helps patients better understand their personal identity and their relationships. TFP is unique in how it uses the patient’s experience of the therapist (the transference) to uncover key elements in how patients see themselves and others.

When do you need psychotherapy?
